Search Engine Optimization Help Employers Find You - Workology

Search Engine Optimization â€" Help Employers Find You Search Engine Optimization Search Engine Optimization Craig’s List, Monster.com, the various freelance sites, your local paper, networking sites; there are a million ways for you to look for employers, but who has the time? Even if you do have the time chances are high that you’re not going to find every single job you qualify for. Optimizing your resume or a cover letter and posting it either within a job site or on its own can actually help employers find you. It is essential though that you are attracting the right people if you do wish to optimize your job seeking materials. Update your resume There are a number of places you can insert keywords without sounding forced. Instead of your name or “Resume” as a title, try “Experienced Marketing Professional” or whatever sort of job you are seeking. This not only has the benefit of searching better, it is a rare case of better SEO actually sounding better to humans. Since resumes do not generally read like an essay about yourself, you don’t have to  worry about ruining the tone with excess wordage as much, it is still important to not overdo it though. Remember it does not matter how many people see your resume if it doesn’t sound good. Make sure your Cover Letter is talking to the right people There are a million and one advice columns about the cover letter, whether to use one, how long it should be, etc. Depending what type of cover letter you need for the kind of job you are seeking, optimizing your letter can be helpful. What you don’t want to do is compromise your content though. Keep optimization light. First of all Cover Letters are usually short, so they don’t need a lot of keywords (ideal percents for keywords are usually less than 2%), second here it is even more important that you are sending the right message. Try having two copies if you feel the optimization on you cover letter takes away from the content in any way. Have one for when you send out your resume and letter, and another copy that employers can search online.
